About IELTS

What is IELTS?

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency across the globe. Conducting 1.7 million tests globally, IELTS is the world’s most popular English testing system. IELTS tests are held in over 200 centres with tests up to four times a month. IELTS respects international diversity and is fair to anyone who sits the test, regardless of nationality.

You can choose from two types of IELTS test: Academic or General Training, depending on whether you want to study, work or migrate. Both modules are made up of four parts – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. IELTS results are graded on the unique IELTS 9-band scale.

To help you prepare, IELTS provides test samples and Official IELTS Practice Materials. The test covers the full range of ability from non-user to expert user. You are not limited in how many times you can sit the test.

You can trust the quality and security of IELTS because it is jointly owned by three reputable, international organisations: IDP: IELTS Australia, British Council and the Cambridge English Language Assessment (CELA).

How is this test organized?

The test is divided into two parts:

The writing session includes Listening, Reading and Writing

The oral session includes Speaking

The writing session (Listening, Reading and Writing) takes place within one day and lasts for approximately three hours.

The oral session lasts for only 15 minutes and each candidate has his or her own speaking time. The oral session can be arranged the same day or within 5 days before or after the writing session. The test venue for the writing and oral sessions may be different, so candidates will be advised the exact venue for each session.

Test transfer and cancellation

  • Test transfer: Candidates who need to change their allocated test date are required to inform the test center in writing (form available) 5 weeks prior to the test date, only one transfer is permitted per test.
  • Test cancellation: Candidates who need to cancel their test registration are required to inform the test center in writing (form available) 5 weeks or more prior to the official test date. In this case, 75% of the test fee will be refunded to the candidate.

IELTS result

The test result will be available to candidates 13 days after the date of the writing test at the IDP Offices in Ha Noi and District 1, Ho Chi Minh City. Provincial candidates can have their result sent to them by providing their address on the registration form (domestic postal charges are covered by IDP). Only one certificate is sent to each candidate and will not be reissued in case of loss caused by the candidate.

Candidates, who cannot collect their result from the IDP offices in person, can nominate a relative to receive it by submitting a nomination letter. The nominee has to show the candidate’s ID card or passport, and their own when receiving the result.

Test results are available online at the IDP website 13 days after the date of the writing test by providing the required information.

Within one month of issuance of the official certificate, a maximum of five IELTS certificates can be sent directly to international or domestic educational institutions to which the candidate is applying to,  or organizations and companies where the candidate is employed or Embassies where the candidate’s visa application is being assessed. Within this period, extra certificates are issued free of charge. After this period, the candidate is required to pay US$5 for each additional certificate

IDP will send the certificate to domestic addresses free of charge. Candidates must pay postal fees if they would like to send the certificate to foreign countries.

Re-marking the result

Candidates can request a re-mark of one or all four skills by filling in the Request for Remarking form (available at testing centers). The request has to be made no later than 6 weeks from the date of the writing session. The remarked outcome will be released within 6 to 8 weeks of the receipt of the request signed by the candidate. The fee for remarking is 2,000,000VND. This fee will be refunded if there is a change in the result.

Unexpected situations

IDP takes necessary measures to maintain services. However, we cannot be held responsible if the test is influenced by unexpected factors out of our control such as fire, flood, war, banned street access and extended power outage. In case of cancellation of the test for the above reasons, IDP will arrange for the candidates to sit an upcoming test date.
